Where St. Clair Shores dogs roam
St. Clair Shores is choosy about dogs in parks. Apart from the dog park, city code allows them only in Wahby Park and Blossom Heath Park, on a leash of six feet or less, unless the parks director grants a permit. Wahby, at 24800 Jefferson, has a pond, a fountain, a gazebo and a walkway. Blossom Heath, between Nine and Ten Mile, adds lake views and a fishing pier. Leave your dog home for Memorial Park's beach.
For off-leash play, the Statler-Maloof Bark Park at Brys Park has 53,842 square feet fenced into big-dog and small-dog areas. New members take an etiquette class first.

Lakefront, canal-side and inland
Housing in St. Clair Shores runs from large lakefront homes to bungalows, ranches and colonials, with high-rise and low-rise apartments in the mix. East of Jefferson, many homes have canal access.

Here, the water is right there. St. Clair Shores fronts Lake St. Clair and has more than 14 miles of canals. The city's sewer system dates to the 1940s and is part separate, part combined, and in peak storms county basins in the city can release overflow into the lake.
Memorial Park's beach is one of the five beaches the county Health Department tests for E. coli, and Michigan's cleanup plan for it lists pet waste among the possible sources. The Health Department's advice for pet owners: pick up routinely and put the waste in the garbage.
The local rule: Remove your dog's waste from sidewalks, recreation areas and private property. At home, dispose of it promptly so it doesn't spread or create an offensive condition. (St. Clair Shores Code Sec. 6-15)
