Eastpointe packs about 34,000 people into roughly 5.4 square miles, mostly in brick homes built around World War II. That's a lot of backyards close together, and every one with a dog has the same chore.

Where Eastpointe dogs roam
Eastpointe's off-leash spot is MiDOG Park, inside Memorial Park at Ten Mile Road and Flower. It's run by the Recreation Authority of Roseville and Eastpointe, and entry is by key fob: take your dog's license receipt and vaccination records to the Recreation Authority Center on Sycamore in Roseville. City code sets the house rules: an etiquette class first, no more than two dogs per person, fill any holes your dog digs, and pick up every time.
Outside the park, Eastpointe requires a leash no longer than six feet whenever your dog leaves home, and even on a leash, dogs can't wander onto someone else's lawn without permission. Want a second option? St. Clair Shores' Statler-Maloof Bark Park, next door, sells non-resident memberships.

Brick homes, small yards
Eastpointe's homes are mostly brick, and most went up just before or after World War II. The city calls itself one of the densest in the region, so neighbors are close by.
With neighbors this close, most Eastpointe dog owners start with weekly visits. Two or three dogs in a small yard? Twice a week keeps it fresh. A lone small dog can often go every other week. Want potty zones to smell better? Add deodorize and sanitize, a pet-safe enzyme spray.
Where the rain goes in Eastpointe
In Eastpointe, stormwater and sewage share the same pipes. On a normal day, that flow heads to a treatment plant in Detroit. In heavy rain, the extra goes to the county's Chapaton basin at the foot of Nine Mile Road in St. Clair Shores, and in the biggest storms some of it is released into Lake St. Clair. The county is spending millions to cut those overflows.
Dog waste rinsed off a lawn rides along. The Macomb County Health Department's tip is to pick up pet waste routinely and put it in the garbage. Bagged and in the can, it stays out of the pipes.
The local rule: Pick up after your dog on sidewalks, recreation areas and other people's property. At home, waste must be buried or contained and dealt with promptly. Off your property, keep a leash of 6 feet or less. (Eastpointe Code Sec. 8-1(12), Sec. 8-7, Sec. 18-149)
