What does a pooper scooper service do? A visit, step by step

Here's what a pet waste removal service actually does, in the order it happens, using a Poopy Scoops visit as the example. You'll also see what's included, what we ask of you, and what happens if we miss something.

What does a pooper scooper service actually do?

It removes dog waste from your yard on a regular schedule, so you don't have to. You can pick a recurring plan (weekly, every other week or twice a week) or book a one-time cleanup for a yard that needs a reset.

Every visit includes:

• A text when we're on the way
• A full-yard sweep in a grid, with corners, mulch beds and the fence line included
• Double-bagged waste, left in your outdoor trash can
• A latched gate and a gate-check photo by text
• Tools and boots disinfected before the next yard

Two add-ons are optional. Deodorize and sanitize is a pet-safe enzyme spray on the potty zones, for $8 a visit. Haul-away takes the bags with us instead of leaving them in your can, for $4 a visit.

We scoop whatever areas you tell us about, whether that's the backyard, a side yard or a dog run. What a scooper doesn't do is lawn care: picking up won't repair urine spots or bare patches that are already there.

What happens before the first visit?

You get a price online, sign up, and we set a regular service day with you. Pricing takes about 30 seconds: tell us how many dogs you have, how often you want us, your yard size and when it was last cleaned. Sign-up and payment happen online too, by card or bank account, with no card fees.

Before that first visit, tell us how to get in, whether that's an unlocked gate or a code. Also flag anything in the yard we should know about: hazards, sprinklers, an invisible fence, or areas to avoid.

How does a dog poop removal service work, step by step?

Every visit follows the same routine, in the same order.

1. We text you. A heads-up when we're on the way is your cue to bring the dogs inside.
2. We walk the whole yard in a grid. We go back and forth in lanes so nothing gets skipped, including corners, mulch beds and the fence line, where piles are easy to miss.
3. We bag it twice. Waste goes into a bag, that bag goes into a second one, and both go into your outdoor trash can. With haul-away, they leave with us.
4. We treat the potty zones, if you asked. With the deodorize and sanitize add-on, we spray a pet-safe enzyme treatment where your dog goes most.
5. We latch the gate and send a photo. You get a text with a picture of your closed gate, so you know the yard is secure.
6. We disinfect before the next yard. Tools and boots get cleaned between every property.

Why walk a grid and double-bag?

Because the goal is all of it, not most of it. The CDC says dog poop can carry germs that make people and animals sick, and that it should be picked up even in your own yard, especially where children may play. A grid is how "picked up" ends up meaning the whole yard.

Bagging it for the trash is what the CDC recommends too: bury it, or bag it and throw it away. UC IPM, the University of California's pest management program, also advises sealing pet feces in plastic bags before they go in the trash can, to keep flies out. And none of it goes near a storm drain. Macomb County Public Works warns that dog waste left outside washes into drains and ditches, and from there into local lakes and streams.

Why disinfect tools and boots?

Because some of what's in dog poop can travel on gear. The Merck Veterinary Manual says dogs can catch canine parvovirus indirectly, from contaminated surroundings, people and equipment, and it suggests disinfecting footwear. Cornell University's Baker Institute adds that the virus can survive for months outside a dog, even through the winter, and holds up against most household cleaners.

A scooper's boots and tools go from yard to yard. Cleaning them between stops keeps one yard's problem from hitching a ride to yours.

What do you need to do?

Not much, and you don't need to be home. A few things make every visit go smoothly:

• Keep dogs inside while we're there. It keeps everyone safe and lets us move fast. If an animal in the yard makes a visit unsafe, we may have to skip it, and that visit counts as completed.
• Make sure we can get in. Leave the gate unlocked or share the code. When we can't get into the yard on service day, we count the visit as completed, so tell us if a code changes.
• Keep us posted. A new dog, a new hazard or a changed gate code: a quick text keeps your visits and your price accurate.
• Text us to skip or pause. Skipping a visit doesn't change your monthly price. For trips of two weeks or more, text us at least one business day ahead and we'll pause your plan, with no billing for the paused time.
• Grab what you see between visits. The CDC's advice is to pick up every time, especially where kids play. Think of our scheduled sweep as the backstop.

Once we've latched the gate and sent the photo, keeping it closed is up to you.

What is the Happy Yard Guarantee?

If we missed a spot, tell us within 24 hours of your visit and we'll come back and clean it at no charge. Just call or text (586) 325-7970. The text we send when we finish marks when that window starts.

We walk every yard in a pattern built to find every pile we reasonably can. A few things can still hide from anyone: waste under snow, in dense brush or under standing water may have to wait for a later visit.

What happens in rain, snow and ice?

We scoop in rain and cold. We reschedule for lightning, ice or other unsafe conditions, usually to the next available day.

Snow is the big one around here. The National Weather Service's normal for Detroit is 45 inches a season, with January and February the snowiest months. When a storm buries the yard, we pick up everything sitting above the snow, and we catch up on what was underneath once it melts. How is a one-time cleanup different?

It's the same grid sweep, done once, usually on a yard with a backlog. Prices start at $133 for one dog. The online price is an estimate, and we confirm the final price with you before we start. You're invoiced after the work is done, and no subscription starts. It's a good fit for the spring thaw, a move-out or the day before a party.
